Fast Fault Identification in Bipolar HVDC Grids: A Fault Parameter Estimation Approach

نویسندگان

چکیده

The protection of meshed HVDC grids requires the fast identification faults affecting transmission lines. Communication-based methods are thus not suited due to delays. Many approaches involving a model transient behavior faulty line have recently been proposed. Nevertheless, an accurate description traveling wave phenomenon in multi-conductor lines such as overhead complex computations ill-suited for fault identification. This paper presents single-ended algorithm using closed-form parametric behavior. combines physical and behavioral parts depends explicitly on parameters that characterize fault, namely distance impedance. When is suspected, estimated so fits best received measurements. confidence region used decide whether protected actually or not. proposed tested 4 station grid simulated with EMTP-RV software. method able identify measurement window less than 0.5 ms. allows ultra-fast clearing can hence improve overall reliability future grids.

Requirements for Fault Protection in HVDC Grids

Conventional Voltage Source Converters (VSC) cannot interrupt DC fault currents and DC circuit breakers are not yet commercially available for HVDC power ratings. Thus, the protection of VSC-HVDC systems is still an obstacle for the development of this technology. The features of VSC-HVDC systems make them suitable for implementing HVDC grids. Nevertheless, HVDC grids are more complex than poin...

Stator Fault Detection in Induction Machines by Parameter Estimation Using Adaptive Kalman Filter

This paper presents a parametric low differential order model, suitable for mathematically analysis for Induction Machines with faulty stator. An adaptive Kalman filter is proposed for recursively estimating the states and parameters of continuous–time model with discrete measurements for fault detection ends. Typical motor faults as interturn short circuit and increased winding resistance ...

Fault Type Estimation in Power Systems

This paper presents a novel approach for fault type estimation in power systems. The Fault type estimation is the first step to estimate instantaneous voltage, voltage sag magnitude and duration in a three-phase system at fault duration. The approach is based on time-domain state estimation where redundant measurements are available. The current based model allows a linear mapping between the m...
